One On One: Inside the Artist's Mind

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with the artist DK Osorio. After successfully negotiating the 27 levels of security in her compound and crossing the lake of fire, I was able to ask a few questions.

Where do you work?

Me and my minions work by torchlight in an abandon crystallized cave with the wailing of Volitare.. sorry My studio is in the house. The living room to be exact. Even though the location is a western exposure, I get ample light to work by. Unlike most art studios where it might says "I dare you to find an inch of workspace", when I'm done for the day, the toys are put away. Probably one of the few artists that can't work in clutter.

Do you work from life, photos, or imagination?

I like doing either photos or, when I'm in the mood, allow my subconscious to surprise me. Interestingly, I've been noticing lately however, some good abstract works popping out when I'm semi-conscious. So I might stop with the energy drinks.

Other artists tend to paint the same type of subject: animals, landscapes, etc. But your artworks differ greatly from one to the next. Why is that?

I like to do everything at least once. If someone asks me to paint something I never done before, it excites me. I'm not wired to do,say, abstract or still life consistently. I admire people who can. They probably have more success selling. However, my brain would likely up and leave, if it had legs.

What technique do you use? Do you consider yourself an expressionist or a perfectionist?

Yes, I'm afraid I'm a little fusspot when it comes to my work. I'm like Ms. Redo. I have gone over sections sometimes countless times. So much a perfectionist, that I have a painting that I have been working on and off for years. I would like one day to finish it before I go completely mad.

What moves you the most in life?

Besides coffee?

Craftmanship in art. When I see someone doing something that you knew had to take time to create. Like Tibetan monks making a sand mandala, hearing a masterfully woven piece of music or an intricate sculpture. Live for those "stop in your track" moments.

You never had any formal training. Why is that?

Taking a college course told me that I was better off home-schooled. Can a person who is detailed obsessive and takes way over the allotted time to finish a project make it in a structured art environment? I know not.

What most about your art would you like people to know about you?

Sappy Alert!!

That my husband, Robert is front and center. He's definitely crazy to be with me. And boy, I love him for it. That I get enjoyment from people who really spend time looking at one of my paintings and then telling me they noticed something in it they didn't catch before. Like realizing the wedding dress is the same one they wore or suddenly seeing a cat hiding behind a bush. But hopefully, not finding a mistake. Eek!
